Growing up next to one of the busiest airports in the world can make a person either love aircraft or hate them. And those that grow to hate aircraft usually solve the problem by moving away from them. But Ed Menninger was never like most people. As soon as he could he enlisted in the Army and when they asked him what he hoped to accomplish he replied with "destroy as many airplanes as possible." And that remark coming from most men would have them put in therapy or prison, but again Ed Menninger was never like most people. The recruiter took one look at the size of Menninger and laughed the remark off. When he was assigned to artillery he fell right in. He focused everything on learning targeting and tracking aircraft. The mathematics seem to come naturally to him and he had a 98% hit rate on the target range. Truly, Ed Menninger was not like most people.

Menninger's success on the target range transferred to the battlefield. He had no fear when stepping in a airplanes flight path and launching his anti-aircraft rockets straight up its nosecone. For Ed, every plane he took down was one less noisy beast in the air. He never thought about the pilots, it was just him and the airplane, one on one. His accomplishments gained the attention of General Hawk and he was invited to join the G.I. Joe team. He gladly accepted with the knowledge that he would be on the battlefield more often and have more targets to take down.
